A. What is the Hokkaido Rail Pass?
HOKKAIDO RAIL PASS holders may ride all JR Hokkaido trains (excluding Hokkaido Shinkansen) within the valid period.
If you have a HOKKAIDO RAIL PASS, you can ride all JR Hokkaido trains (excluding Hokkaido Shinkansen)and some designated JR buses within Hokkaido. This allows you to ride buses and trains without having to buy tickets each time, and you don't have to worry about language barriers.
*There is an extra charge for the sleeping car and carpet car.
*The JR Hokkaido bus routes available to pass holders are limited
*There is an extra charge for boarding the Twinkle Bus

B. How many days is it valid?
Choose from a 3-Day, 5-Day, 7-Day or Flexible 4-Day pass
*1. The 3-Day, and 5-Day 7-Day pass allows you to choose the starting date, and can be used for either 3 or 5 or 7 consecutive days from the starting date.
*2. The starting date of valid period cannot be selected with the Flexible 4-Day pass. It is effective the day you either purchase or exchange it, that being day one, and continues to be effective for ten days in which it can be used any four days either consecutive or not.
EX: If you purchase or exchange a Flexible 4-Day pass the 1st of July, it is effective until July 10th, and can be used any four days within the ten day period.
*3. The validity period of rail passes is based on the date of purchase/exchange. Example: If the starting date of a 3-day Hokkaido Rail Pass is May 1 and the pass is purchased/exchanged on May 1 at 15:00, it will be valid until May 3.

C. Who can use the HOKKAIDO RAIL PASS?
The HOKKAIDO RAIL PASS is available only for visitors from abroad who enter Japan with a non-Japanese passport under the entry status of "Temporary Visitor".
At the time of exchange or purchase at a designated station, you will be asked to present your passport with the "Temporary Visitor" stamp/sticker you received.
According to Japanese Immigration Law, the entry status of "Temporary Visitor" allows a stay in Japan of 15 days or 90 days for the purpose of sightseeing, etc. If you apply for a stay for sightseeing etc. when you enter Japan, an immigration officer will give you a "Temporary Visitor" stamp/sticker. Your passport must bear this stamp/sticker to use the HOKKAIDO RAIL PASS.
*The pass cannot be purchased if you enter Japan under the entry status other than "Temporary Visitor", such as "Training", "Entertainer" or "Re-entry", etc.
*The entry status of "Temporary Visitor" is for sightseeing, recreation, sports, visiting relatives, inspection tours, attending lectures or meetings, business contact or other similar activities during a short peirod of stay in Japan.
*If you use an automated gate, the "Temporary Visitor" stamp/sticker will not be applied to your passport. Please use either a manned automated gate or ask a clerk to apply the stamp/sticker to your passport.
